The native alder is a great shelterbelt choice. Its advantages include its growth rate of up to 4 feet a year, to its maximum height of 80 to 100 ft, a height that should be high enough to soften the worst of breezes. The Alder prefers to grow in moist soil. It can be mixed with other types of both evergreen and deciduous shelter belt trees.
